[rsyslog] General availability of atomic operations?

Hi all,
I am currently facing a situation where I can re-structure message object
represenation in a very efficient way if I have atomic operations available.
However, if they are not available, the very same implementation would have a
heavy hit on concurrency and overhead.
What I need is atomic increments and decrements (for reference counting). So
I wonder if support for these operations is available on a sufficiently large
number of platforms. I would appreciate feedback on this issue, including
pointers to place where else I could put this question.
Thanks,
Rainer
