Well, at least with 5.2.0, rsyslogd does not complain if I start it
with -c4 (complain in the sense, that rsyslog says it's running in
non-native mode)

That's good to know. It seems the 5.2.* series is some kind of
neglected so maybe it's best to just skip that branch. and wait for
5.4.* or stable 5.3.* beta releases.
