It sounds as if this system is sending garbage over the tcp connection. You
would need to use tcpdump to capture exactly what is being sent.

unfortunately, it looks like they have multiple problems (both delimiter
problems, but also message size problems)

the uncompression error is definitely a malformed message (it starts with a
z instead of < )
