what did you try to do to get debug output?

With the old-style configs, the order of everything is important, when you
initialize the network listener, it initializes with the message size
that's set at that time

This sort of confusion is a large part of the reason for the new config
format that is available in v8, there you define everything together rather
than as something that looks like it's a bunch of independent items.
