There could also be permission issues with you reaching the display.

I would suggest that you simplify things and just try to start an xterm to
troubleshoot your gui issues. Look in your logs to see if you see
connections being refused

depending on what distro you are running, you could also be running into
SELinux or AppArmor blocking you. I know that on RedHat rsyslog running
from the init scrips has different SELinux permissions than if you run it
manually as root.

You can also create a named pipe, have your gui app attach to it to read
and rsyslog write to it as if it was a normal file to connect the two
