does openvz really replace the CentOS and Ubuntu kernels? That seems like a
pretty drastic thing for a container to do, at that point the openvz people
now have to deal with all the hardware compatibility issues.

remember that with a container, there is no kernel inside the container,
it's the kernel of the host system.

did you try disabling AppArmor on the Ubuntu system?
