In general, having multiple copies of rsyslog installed is not likely to
end well.

Even if you change your version to not look in the standard places, are you
sure the distro version isn't going to find any parts of your version?

I would suggest that you just uninstall the distro version.

If the problem is the package dependencies that will get removed as well,
you can use checkinstall to make a package from the version you compile to
keep the package manager happy.
