Sorry to spam the thread, but I can't edit the post after a fairly short
time.

I've just discovered that the above counter resets seem to be caused by a
rsyslog restart, which was not performed manually, but perhaps rsyslog
segfaulted or something and was restarted by a process supervisor or
something like that.

Here's my /var/log/syslog:

[code:3s9aeuip]
May  1 16:43:43 log-agg1 rsyslogd: [origin
software="rsyslogd" swVersion="8.7.0" x-pid="4753"
x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] start
May  1 16:43:43 log-agg1 rsyslogd: rsyslogd's groupid changed
to 104
May  1 16:43:43 log-agg1 rsyslogd: rsyslogd's userid changed to
101
May  1 18:39:21 log-agg1 rsyslogd: [origin
software="rsyslogd" swVersion="8.7.0" x-pid="7102"
x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] start
May  1 18:39:21 log-agg1 rsyslogd: rsyslogd's groupid changed
