I would suggest that a better option would be to create a string module
that    
would create a new template to use that would use $.hostname if it's
defined,   
and if not use $hostname and do the same with syslogtag, pri andtimestamp.

That way, if you want to override soemthing, you just set the appropriate
$.    
variable and use the correct template.
