if you send it with octect framing mode, the newlines will not break up the
message. Then if the receiver has escape control characters turned on it
will escape them.

There is an option in the template engine that is supposed to escape
characters, but it's currently buggy and escapes things incorrecty (it says
it's escaping to octal, but it actually escapes to decimal values.
