There are huge performance improvements between 5.8 and 8.2, and unless you
are using some odd output module, it should be 100% backwards compatible.

Given that Fedora isn't supporting that version of rsyslog either (since
all of F17 is past EOL), you are probably better off upgrading to a current
version of rsyslog if your use requires significant amounts of logging

liblogging is new enough that it may depend on things newer than what is
avaialble in F17, but you can give it a shot.
