Interesting!
I'm trying to embrace the newer syntax... I'm curious why the default
rsyslog.conf still ships with the older syntax. It may just be the package
that ships with Red Hat Linux though I'm not sure. It had me wondering if
for some reason I had to use the old format for the version I am using but
everything I am reading suggests that I do not.
I have come across numerous instances on the web where Rainer is warning
against using the old syntax or asking people why they are still using it.
I think most administrators only look at rsyslog.conf enough to do a basic
config an simply modify the default rsyslog.conf enough to achieve what
they need. If they do decide to do something a little more advanced they
don't want to go too far out of their comfort zone and still stick to the
old syntax.
If you want people to stop using it I think you will have to force it on
them via the default rsyslog.conf file. Myself being not very familiar with
compiling software and building packages I don't really know who would be
responsible for that, the project or the distribution.
