[quote="dlang":1ridwreu]It's always far better to fix logs on the sender
than to have the receiver try to clean things up. I wrote the
pmaixforwardedfrom module after years of frustration in not being able to
get my ops team to add that silly flag to their AIX
configs.[/quote:1ridwreu]
I can't begin to thank you enough for trying to bridge the gap between AIX
and Linux, it is a constant struggle for me. I like working with AIX it is
a great OS and still offers a lot that has yet to come to Linux. But Linux
has evolved in so many ways and improved upon traditional Unix standards. I
wish AIX would try harder to fit into the "open" ways of doing things (AIX
is still actively developed by IBM it's not like it's dead or anything,
they are still developing some very interesting things).
But you suggested before It would be better to solve this on AIX. The first
time I tried it didn't seem to work, but it may have been as simple as I
forgot to restart the syslog service. I don't really know at this point.
But the second time around I did the exact same thing and achieved the
behavior I wanted. (although I still have a few "Previous message forwarded
N times" that show up every so often and I have no idea which server they
are coming from. But it's very uncommon.)
I'm exploring the ramifications of using rsyslog on AIX instead of the
native syslog, IBM actually distributes it, so it it must be a somewhat
common thing to do.
