you shouldn't need to use a template with only constand data in it.

If you do rsyslogd -N2 it will check the syntax of your config files and
report errors like this.

5.8 is rather ancient (current is 8.10) so there's going to be a limit to
the support that we can provide on this. If you need more support on the
old version shipped with your distro than we can provide, you will need to
go through your distro support channels.
