I hate this sort of bug :-( It gets really hard to track down.

If we can't capture a debug log of the crash, the next things to do are

check the impstats output, is there a chance you are filling a memory queue
and running out of RAM (either ulimits or the OOM killer)?

try running it under valgrind see if it reports any issues.

see if you can capture a tcpdump of the traffic going to it at the time it
crashes. That may let us reproduce the problem (assuming that it doesn't
depend on too much data being in the queue)
