is good but I think using GNUTLS certtool's
--template option might be easier?

If not easier it makes scripting and using a configuration management tool
like Ansible a whole lot easier.

I tried to setup the template file but have so far failed. 

I know this isn't a rsyslog specific thing (setting up certificates) but
I'm hoping someone could make template file as an example so I can build
off of that for deploying TLS to all my rsyslog servers.
