If there is no free disk, nothing can be wrritten to the disk queue, so
things will back up to the in-memory queue.

for crash safety, look at the sync and checkpoint options, they let you
specify the frequency that things are forced to disk (note, there is a
performance hit from this, and it can be drastic if you set the checkpoint
interval too small.
