the fact that the problems happen at the same time every day makes me think
there is something external going on. It could be a network issue, a disk
I/O issue on the receiver (not being able to write out the logs it's
receiving at that time), etc.

sorry to keep harping on the receiver, but I've seen so many problems where
the sender starts queueing for no obvious reason end up being tracked down
to the receiver when using TCP or RELP that it's something I want to keep
looking at as we narrow down the timeframe.
